Stop All The Drake Hate…..

Filed under: Blogs —— thegrind @ 3:24 pm

drake21

First, let me admit that I am not a fan of Drake’s, at least not in the traditional sense.

I downloaded his last mixtape and was told the last one was better. I appreciate this one, but I haven’t felt compelled to get the first one. I figure I’ll hear it when I hear it. I don’t have the urge to go see him live either. I am not particularly interested in his background, aside from the funny fact that he was “Wheelchair Jimmy” on that show “Degrassi High.” (Weird!) That typically should signify his downfall in Hip-Hop…acting. Go figure. I think he is talented, but prefer that he not sing so much.

Nevertheless, my views aside, Drake is here and he’s the hottest thing out.

And, in true contemporary Hip-Hop fashion…the hate has swelled and runneth over.

Two major mixtapes, an affiliation with Lil Wayne, some ghostwriting, shows across the nation and a bidding war with a pair of major labels. With all tha going for him, Drake is still face to face with the scorn of the Hip-Hop nation.

Now, I have to wonder where we have gone wrong where we resolved to tear our young talents down before they even get up. I know that the crabs-in-a-barrel mentality has always been present, but we are talking about fans and critics, not peers. In Hip-Hop, there is a tradition of hoisting the artist on our collective shoulders and pushing the best to the top. And “best” doesn’t always mean best – it means those that resonate with us. We’ve done that regardless of their talent. Look at Young Jeezy, Maino and Gucci Mane and look at Jay-Z, Wayne, Eminem and others. Varying degrees of talent with one thing in common.

Hating for no reason – when did this become fashionable?

Hip-Hop is gradually turning into a Nation of Haters – hating just to hate. This means investing a lot of energy in hating some rapper like Drake when you should put time in supporting that rapper you love. That is assuming you love anybody. It’s probably time to rechristen the term fan into something else like “people that ruin people before they reach their potential.” Fan is short for “fanatic,” which means one that has “excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion.” This idea of fanaticism is rare in 2009.

This editorial isn’t about Drake, even though he is the centerpiece. The hate towards him is puzzling considering what he’s achieving before our eyes. Is there loathing because he’s got a shot with Rihanna? Or that he is a fair-skinned, half Jewish Canadian and not from the South Bronx or the Dirty South? Perhaps the hate stems from his close link with another “detested” (and million-in-one-week-selling) rapper in Lil Wayne? I am open to any and all reasonable answers, but I think people just hate.

I’m not a Soulja Boy fan by any stretch of the human imagination, but I sit back and I laugh for that young man. I laugh because he made it through somehow. I would have bet money that he would be a failure after his first album, banished forever as a wack one hit wonder. But, through all the hate he got, he survived another outing. Now, lyrically Drake does laps around Soulja Boy, but they share the same hate in the hearts of fans. Does anybody remember the HYPE – I mean, sheer, unbridled HYPE surrounding Nas when he first emerged? Imagine what would become of Nas has he just gotten started in 2009.

Does it seem even remotely familiar in concept?

Here is a news flash: Redman, Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent – these talented individuals are not going to be around forever. It is high time we stop the hating and draft some new, fresh faces into the game. The League of Hip-Hop is already a difficult sport to rise in, why are the fans the ones blocking the young rap talents’ shots when all they want to do is dunk for your entertainment?

PS: This is not a PSA for letting wack people in the game so don’t try it!

Kanye Speaks on Blueprint 3….

Filed under: OHG News —— thegrind @ 2:11 pm

According to its producers, the upcoming Blueprint 3 album is sure to please. No I.D. has already noted that the album will be a full-fledged classic. Now, Kanye West is adding to the comments he’s already made about the CD.

“Jay is in control of everything in his domain,” he told MTV. Even though he has previously claimed that the album was finished, he now says he is glad it wasn’t released sooner. “He’s just been working on it, and it’s gonna be amazing when he drops it. I think it’s good he’s taking his time to give people the best product possible and not being rushed by this fast-food, media-outlet, Internet, everything-is-getting-leaked, people-stealing your-songs-before-you-can-mix-them-and-put-them-online world we’re living in right now.”

Don’t expect any Auto-Tune on this album. West thinks this will be an anti-Auto-Tune CD.

“We actually removed all the songs with Auto-Tune off of his album to make the point that this is an anti-Auto-Tune album, even though I released an album that has all Auto-Tune!” “It doesn’t matter to me,” he said of the decision. “It’s music; it’s just sonics. I like Auto-Tune so I do it, but you want the other thing — like you’ll wear a suit to a wedding and gym shoes to a basketball game. I think it’s a perfect moment for Jay to provide some gym shoes to a basketball game right now.”

No word on when Jay will be providing the music, however. Now free from Def Jam

, the album will likely be released through his label, Roc Nation. Still, details have not been released as of press time.

Rumors: Lauren London Wanted Abortion/Wayne Not so Much….

Filed under: Word On The Street —— thegrind @ 5:01 pm

lauren-suckerfree-2

This is a case of T.M.I., I think. However, it is what it is. Apparently, LL gave her virginity up to wayne, says Egypt. Also, its being said that Lauren wanted to have an abortion instead of keeping the lil guy/girl, because she didn’t want to be one of Weezy’s baby mommas. But…she was willing to be one of his jump offs? I’m just sayin! Anyway, it is rumored that Wayne told her he’d go public with the abortion and everything if she didn’t just have the kid. Hmmmmmm….wondering if this has any validity.

And to think all along, I thought she was messing with T.I.

T.I. Begins Prison Sentence….

Rapper T.I. checked into a federal prison in Forrest City, Arkansas today (May 26).

Confusion briefly broke out this morning about the time of the rapper’s surrender, which occurred around 12:29 CST, sources told AllHipHop.com.

T.I., born Clifford Harris Jr. is now serving a 366-day federal prison sentence for attempting to by illegal machine guns and silencers from undercover agents in October of 2007.

Officers blockaded the prison entrance and refused to allow reporters any closer than within 170 yards of the prison.

A source told AllHipHop.com that T.I. was issued a new check-in date, which may explain the delay.

T.I. originally faced 10 years in prison for attempting to purchase high powered AK-47’s and AR-15s with silencers.

Representatives for T.I. were not available to comment as of press time.

T.I. recently preformed a farewell concert in front of 16,000 fans on Sunday (May 24).

Jay-Z Was Better Than Big….

JAYZ

Jay-Z vs Biggie. A Debate that has been going on in hip hop for quite some time. Both rappers changed the game in so many ways. While they both are great emcees, I believe Jay is the victor.
Lyricism
When Biggie rapped, everyone paid attention. He had so much presence on the microphone that he made others invisible (ex. Flava in Ya Ear). While he didnt have a large vocabulary, his flow, husky voice & story telling abilities more than made up for it. When he rapped, it was like watching a movie. You could actually sit down, close your eyes & visualize every thing he said. But, it would be hard to deny Jay-Z lyrical superiority at that time. Jay-Z could rhyme so fast, so good, included multi rhyme schemes in one bar & did it so nonchalant. During his “Reasonable Doubt” days he was more lyrically comparable to Nas/AZ than he was to Big. On the songs, they did together Jay got at Big alot but, it was brushed under the rug due to Big’s Stardom.

Productivity
It wouldn’t be fair to compare Jay-Z’s whole career to Big’s short time here. Biggie was active from 1994-1997…..3 years. So we’ll compare Big’s first 3 years with Jay’s first 3 years.
Biggie – “Ready to Die” (4x Plat) – 1994

“Life After Death” (10x Plat) – 1997

Jay-Z – “Reasonable Doubt” (Plat) – 1996

“In My Lifetime Vol. 1″ (Plat) – 1997

“Hard Knock Life Vol. 2″ (5x Plat) – 1998

“Life & Times of Shawn Carter” (3x Plat) – 1999

As you can see, Jay put out twice as much material in the same timeframe. While Big sold more records, Jay had more individual songs on the charts. Before Jay, most rappers weren’t dropping records every year. If Jay had so much ambition & hunger for the crown why couldn’t Big been just as focused at defending it. Even Pac had a better work ethic. Big couldve definitely did 2 more records. If he had took the time to make more music…..we would have more to remember him by.

Classic Material

Both Rappers best offering was easily their debut albums. Honestly, after hearing both, I cant decide which one is better; they both are classics. “Ready to Die” is the sole reason for Hip Hop returning to the East Coast. It was so Raw, so Gully. If you ever been thru the struggle, you could feel everything Big was talking about. But, he also made you feel good; like fuck everything else, lets just have a good time & it was dope. “Reasonable Doubt” on the otherhand was one of the most slick, witty, thought provoking albums in which I ever heard. It detailed the street life/drug trade so intricately, that you could play the album today & hear something you missed years ago. They both are classics, I can’t choose.

Impact on the Game

Biggie came during a time when Hip Hop was dominated by “G Funks, Gangstas & Chronic”. Everybody in America was tryna be a Blood, Crip or a Vato, rocking Ice Cube Jerri Curls, Chuck Taylors, Gold Daytons & 64s. Niggaz had forgot about New York. Big brought that shit back. He was our Hero. No disrespect to Nas or Wu-Tang but, without Big, The West Coast wouldve Reigned for atleast the rest of the decade. Biggie gave New York its swag back. Biggie made it cool to be a fat nigga. Biggie made it cool to rock Coogi Sweaters, Cartier Shades, Yankee Fitteds & Moschinos. He had everyone having dreams of fucking a R&B bitch. He was fat, black & ugly as ever but, still pulling more bitches than Denzel. “IT WAS ALL A DREAM” & Big was the walking embodiment.

In the same breath, Jay-Z has been setting every trend in Hip Hop since 1997. Whatever he said to do, Niggas listened. He told Niggas to rock throwback jerseys, throw away jerseys & put on a button up, throw away the button up & put on a suit, to rock cufflinks, to drink Cristal, to not drink Cristal, to drink Ace of Spade, to start Clothing Lines, had everyone Buying RocaWear, to WIFE R&B bitches, to buy Yachts, to buy G4s, to use 2Ways, to Buy NBA Teams, to Rap over Soul-Samples, to Start your own Label, Had one of the best Hip Hop Dynasties in RocaFella. Most will agree, he perfected “The Club Banger”. Because of him, most rappers are tryna rap off the head. Before him, most rappers dropped every 2-3 years not annually. He has influenced a large percentage of all new rappers; Lil Wayne, Kanye & T.I. (Jay-Z of The South, if you remember that). Everything this man said….became law. Jay’s Influence & Impact on the game is definitely equal to Big’s if not greater. If Biggie was “The King of New York”….Jay-Z’s the “God”

Longevity

I know this a touchy subject, but, fuck it. Jay-Z became the most financially & musically successful hip hop artist ever documented & Biggie didnt. Biggie was murdered at 24, robbed of his destiny; but, there is nothing we can do to change that. According to his peers, Biggie was contemplating giving up rap. Whether he did or not, had he lived, is beyond the point. The fact is, for anyone to do what Jay-Z has done would be damn near Impossible. Who is 100% sure Biggie wouldve still been on top, had he lived. Who is even sure, he wouldve stayed on Bad Boy. What I do know is “The Potential” of what Big couldve been has no weight next to what Jay-Z “Accomplished”. Its not fair for people to shortchange Jay’s Success because they cant accept the fact that Biggie died before he could accomplish much. Imagine if Jordan had a teammate on The Tarheels who was more talented & gave Jordan pointers but, died before he could make it in the league. Would that take away from everything Jordan accomplished????

That fact is, 50 years from now, people will not remember why Big died or how Big died or the Potential he had or how Jay was in his shadow. What they will remember is a great rapper passed away & another great rapper took the reigns & took rap farther than anyone could have imagined.

WE’LL ALWAYS LOVE BIG POPPA, WE’LL NEVER FORGET BIG POPPA. BIG WILL LIVE ON…….NOT IN FRONT OF JAY BUT, BESIDE HIM.

Nick Cannon Says “Eminem Beef” is Over….

Filed under: OHG News —— thegrind @ 9:42 pm

flip-1

After unleashing a lengthy blog rant about Eminem over the lyrics to “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” Nick Cannon says the mini feud with Slim Shady is officially over.

In a brief sit down with Entertainment Weekly, Cannon sticks by every word he wrote, even if the majority of fans on the Internet don’t agree.

“I felt like I said what I had to say,” Cannon tells the publication. “I didn’t take [the post] down, like, Oh, somebody instructed me to do it or anything like that. It was just one of those things, like, I said it.”

The composed Cannon sounds far different than the one who called out Eminem over disrespect to his wife, Mariah Carey, women in general, and black women in particular.

“I feel that my relationship with my wife is one of the best things — or the best thing — that’s ever happened to me, and it has nothing to do with celebrity or this industry. It’s all about, you know, just love and finding love and being happy and respecting the union that it is.”

At the end of the day, perhaps the only people to consider the brief war of words a “beef” was the media and some fans.

“I never even considered it as beef. It’s not beef. It’s just, Hey, I heard the record. I said what I had to say.”

Jay-Z Buys Out Contract…..Will Release His Own Music

Filed under: OHG News —— thegrind @ 10:31 pm

jay-z-suit-230x300

After more than a decade of providing a consistent string of hit albums and songs, Jay-Z is leaving Def Jam Records.

The rap mogul confirmed the amicable split Thursday (May 21). Jay-Z’s departure from Def Jam puts an end to rumors regarding the buy out of his contract with the iconic label, for a reported $5 million dollars.

During his stint at the Def Jam, Jay-Z transitioned from top-selling artist to music executive.

Jay-Z albums released under the Def Jam umbrella included In My Lifetime Vol. 1, Vol. 2.., Hard Knock Life and Vol. 3…Life and Times of S. Carter as well as The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, The Blueprint, The Blueprint: The Gift and the Curse and The Black Album.

After retiring from music in 2003, Jay-Z was appointed president and co-CEO of Def Jam by Reid.

The rapper’s time as president resulted in the acquisition of R&B/pop hit makers Rihanna and Ne-Yo.

In 2007, Jay-Z announced his resignation from his post as president of Def Jam when his contract was not renewed.

The rapper continued his relationship with the label as he remained on the Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam roster as a recording artist.

Prior to officially stepping down, Jay-Z released his 2006 comeback opus, Kingdom Come. A year later, the rapper’s concept album, American Gangster, followed.

In 2008, Jay-Z aligned with Live Nation via a wide-ranging deal, record label that included the creation of the Roc Nation record label as well as albums, touring and publishing.

New Details on Dolla Murder

Filed under: Word On The Street —— thegrind @ 1:31 am

dolla-who-theThis Does Not Reflect The Opinions of OutHereGrindin.com. The information stated below is from an inside source, someone close to the suspected murderer of Roderick “Dolla” Burton.

“Its time to tell the truth about the Rapper Dolla and Aubrey Berry. Please do not question how I know this information, you can choose to withhold this information or be an outlet for this source. Aubrey Berry graduated from Clark Atlanta University last year, he has a perfect credit score, and absolutely no Pryor convictions. On May 13th Aubrey Berry went to Platinum 21 ( a strip club in atlanta ) to celebrate his freind coming to Atlanta for the first time. Dolla was with his immediate affiliates ( Mansfeild Crips – Gang ), he persued the same girl Aubrey was dancing with which led to a verbal dispute. Aubrey Berry was’nt giving up that easy, but little did he know the Dolla and his Crip freinds wanted more than just a dance that night, they wanted a fight. Aubrey Berry is liscensed to carry a hand gun but asumed the night would be silent so he left it in the car before entering the strip club. Dolla and about 5-7 affiliates rushed toward Mr. Berry and began to jump on him by himself. Aubrey covered his face as much as possible and fell to the ground. It wasnt long before the bouncers started clearing everyone out. Dolla and his freinds started taunting Aubrey Berry with Crip gang signs and blue rags. The cops escorted Mr. Berry to his car so he can get to safety. The night ended. Early saturday afternoon, Aubrey Berry left the gym early to go meet with the club owner in LA so he can do a huge party. He went to PF Changs monday with his point of contact in LA to discuss this party, and then thats when it all went down hill. Dolla walks in with 3 of his crip gang members and started to eyeball Aubrey and taunted at him saying ” your on our turf now “. Dolla got on the phone and called for backup, and within 3 minutes the restaurant was filled with the Mansfeild Crip gang members ready to kill Aubrey Berry. Mr. Berry quickly rushed out of the restaurant scarred for his life as they followed close behind him. Dolla and 3 other gang members approuch Aubrey and said “we are going to kill you”

Aubrey tried to difusse the situation by explaining to them that he doesnt want any problems, they began to reach for there waist with one hand under there shirt, at this point Aubrey Berry was saying to himself “they are going to kill me” Mr. Berry was able to remove his 9mm from his holster before the others and get a close shot at Dolla, unfortionatly he was to close to aim anywhere else but his head. Aubrey felt his life was threatened in another city by gang members so he protected himself. I confirmed with other gang members that Dolla was going to kill Aubrey Berry so he can get a higher rank in the street gang notoriously known as the Mansfeild Crips. This was an act of self defense and the LAPD is going to withhold the evidence, they wont release the video tapes to Aubrey’s Lawyer nor will they investigate the gang violence.

Aubrey Berry was in a state of panic mode so he fled to the airport scared for his life in a big city he knows nothing about, he tried to purchase a plane ticket andrun home to his mom but the police found a man whom fit the description of the shooter, and sure enough it was Aubrey Berry. This is the truth, all of this information is 110% accurate. You can choose to use it or you can throw it away but Aubrey Berry’s life is on the line, please help serve justice and peace. Imagine if this was your son or nephew in this situation. Attached, you will find more evidence to support this gang affiliated act of violence.”
